Salkehatchie is a mission project of the United Methodist Church. Started in 1978, this servant ministry provides an opportunity for high school and college students as well as adult leaders to repair substandard housing of elderly, widowed, and impoverished people in our own state. In over 50 camps throughout South Carolina this summer, volunteers will have the privilege not only of rebuilding homes, but also of building relationships and sharing the goodness and grace of God.

Common jobs that the participants have done in the past are shingling and cool sealing roofs, shoring up floors, assisting with plumbing and electrical issues, building ramps, painting and cleaning. The labor and supplies cost nothing to those receiving the help. All materials and supplies are paid for through registration fees paid by the participants and through donations from individuals and businesses.
This July 2019 marked the 19th year that representatives from Lowell Street UMC will have had the privilege to serve as Salkehatchie volunteers at Emerald City Camp. During the week of July 21-26, Jean Creswell from Lowell Street UMC participated in Salkehatchie.
